FACEBOOK, A NEW LIFE STYLE?

Desember 18, 2008

I joined Facebook on July but my account’s friend list never exceeded six friends until last Sunday when I found many excited old classmates being busy with Facebook. Alexa reported Facebook traffic in Indonesia is now on 6th rank exceeded Detik, Youtube and WordPress although still behind Friendster. It’s curious how Facebook became popular so quickly here?

Comparing to other networking sites, I think Facebook has been favorite due to its generous applications. Facebook could fulfill the netter’s demand to be narcissism by putting daily personal information in public wall. The trend of previous popular networking site however showed netters really want to publish as many pics or videos as they can while at the same time they want daily conversation readable publicly. The greeting words like ”Hi, what are you doing, or I was hanging out at the X club but I didn’t find you” were common statements put on the comment section on Myspace. Even in Friendster, people put daily chat on testimonials coloumn. Facebook could combine the best application of Multiply, Youtube, Friendster and Myspace at one page.

The generous application that filled with trivial things showed how serious Facebook offers services to local like Indonesian community. An application, like Indonesian food application of nasi goreng, or soto babad won’t be offered by other networking sites ever. Very unimportant but genuinley smart thing to attract netters. I don’t know whether Facebook created local content by asking early member to fill an application request or Facebook really had a research of it. I remembered turning down Facebook favor asking couple times to translate Facebook in Bahasa Indonesia with consideration why should I donate my time for a commercial site that will only say thank you to express gratitude?

As being friendly to accomodate people to inform minute activity (not daily activity anymore), Facebook have sucessfully held netters to stay longer comparing with the time they spend in other networking site. This will attract more adds that means more business. No wonder Facebook faces productivity issue. Many employers have blocked Facebook in work place. Honestly if I were an empoyer, I will do the same.

Although not a single week I live without Google (thanks to Larry and Sergei, you are among the nicest people in the world ever), Facebook is definitely overwhelming for me. Even today after 6 months joined, I still feel difficult to put my daily conversation in Facebook. Sometimes I am so speechless to many friends’s daily personal chat published in Facebook. What do you think I should comment to a statement of “I am a fan of Indomi goreng?” or “I wish I were on my comfortable bed now”. A friend jokingly said, “What will people think about me if I write in my Facebook that my fart smells bad? ” Ahahaha...

Anyway, if you are typical person that willingly shares every personal trivial things, Facebook will be a getaway site during unpleasant working time. Even if you dont like to share daily personal thing, Facebook will still be interesting since we could find old missing friends or we could just smile reading others daily petty things. What a new life style.

Internet could be so addict, people spend more and more time online in their daily life. Intel published the findings of a recent survey conducted on 2,119 Americans aged 18 and over. The survey revealed that 65 percent of adults feel they cannot live without Internet access. A stunning 46% of women and 30% of men aged 18-34 said they would rather go without sex for two weeks rather than lose daily Internet access for the same period of time.
But what really amused me is SecondLife.com. You could be anyone and anything in the land. You can wear whatever you want that impossible in the real life. It’s not just a game or social networking like any others. The Second Life is a three-dimensional virtual community created entirely by its membership. Members assume an identity and take up residence in Second Life, creating a customized avatar or personage to represent themselves. The avatar moves about in the virtual world using mouse control and intuitive keyboard buttons. Residents buy property, start businesses, game with other residents, create objects, join clubs, attend classes, or just hang out. It uses an internal currency called the “Linden Dollar”, which is purchased for real money.

I am curious about the secondlife, and thinking what would I choose to be if I really had second life. For me Facebook is overwhelming but maybe this one wont be. This could be another way to fullfil dream having a mansion since it is extremely expensive to have in real life haha..

Alexa is a very important benchmark to determine the rankings and traffic of sites. Google is placed at the 2nd position as per Alexa rankings and traffic rankings and is facing tough competition from Live.com and of course Yahoo
